President Grant's hand-planted Hinoki and Goklan (Taishan)

A stone monument of President Grant of the United States was built in a small corner of recently developed Ueno Park (Figure 1), in 1879 (Fig. Meiji 12) August President's hand-planted Japanese cypress (cypress: Cupressus lawsoniana) and her wife's hand-planted Taisanbok (Magnolia grandiflora) were on 25th (Figure 2). A stone monument was built under each tree (Fig. 3, Fig. 4). Taisambok is also known as a bamboo stone in the stone monument.

偶然、今日は足腰に故障が出て、家にいて漫然とテレビを「消音」で流し見していたのだが、日本時間の昼頃から突然テレビでトランプ大統領の「一般教書」の演説があるということで、トランプの議会への入場シーンからLive中継が始まった。
それで、いそいでテレビを「音声」に切り替えた。なんと1時間20分も演説は続いた！ 小生にとって一般教書演説に付き合ったのは生まれてこの方初めてであった。しかしこのLiveは見ていて飽きが来なかった。ヘタなドラマよりも、シナリオとトランプ大統領の振る舞いが、実にドラマテイックにできていたと思う。
予想外の長さにNHKは番組を変更して演説を全部Live中継し、途中で「第2回米朝首脳会談が2月27，28日にベトナムで開かれる」というトランプの発言の直後には、緊急速報として、それをテロップでLive画面に流した。
この恒例の一般教書演説は、民主党の抵抗で2週間ばかり延期されたようだが、トランプにとっては、そのおかげで入念な下準備ができたのではないかと思われるものであった。
まだ生きている様々な分野でのトランプ大統領の視点からの英雄（軍人、宇宙飛行士、米軍によってナチスから解放されたユダヤ人、国境警備員、無実の長期拘留者、脳腫瘍の可愛い少女などなど。。。。。。）を議会の2階傍聴席に招請して、実名で紹介し、その老若男女をほめたたえるのであった。紹介された人たちは本当に誇らしく時に涙を浮かべてうれしそうであった。
もちろん抜け目なく、この間の短期間での大統領在任中でのアメリカファーストの方針で、アメリカ経済が失業率が急速に低下し赫赫たる成果を上げているという自慢話があった。これにはいささか閉口した。
その風景を与党共和党員はいちいちスタンデイングして拍手を送っていた。全部で数十回にもなったのではないだろうか。あくまで議員個人の自発的な賛意を表する振る舞いなんだろうが高齢の議員には、立ったり座ったりの連続は実に負担だろうなと甚く同情相哀れむものがあった。その光景を苦虫をかみつぶして座って考え込んでいる、サンダース議員（？）など民主党議員も映し出されていたのにはつい笑ってしまった。
アメリカの赫赫たる歴史が語られ、世界大戦での勝利への貢献や泥沼の中近東でのアメリカ兵の膨大な人数の犠牲(7000千人死亡、52000人の大けが、7兆ドル戦費）が語られたが、アメリカが加害国であった長期にわたるベトナム戦争でのアメリカ兵の犠牲や「敗戦」が語られることはいっさいなかった。
その戦場であったベトナムで、来る2月27，28日に第2回米朝首脳会談が開かれると宣言した。実に株屋さんらしいプラグマテイズムだと思う。

追記：本日（２月９日） 米朝首脳会談はハノイと決まった。
トランプ米大統領は８日、自身のツイッターに投稿し、今月２７、２８両日に予定している米朝首脳会談の開催都市がベトナムの首都ハノイに決まったことを明らかにした。米国のビーガン北朝鮮政策特別代表が６～８日に平壌を訪問し、北朝鮮の金赫哲（キムヒョクチョル）・元駐スペイン大使との間で最終調整していた。
トランプ氏は金正恩（キムジョンウン）・朝鮮労働党委員長との首脳会談をハノイで開催することを明らかにし、「金委員長と会談し、平和を前進させることを楽しみにしている！」とツイートした。
米政府関係者によると、米政府はベトナム中部のダナンで開催することを希望。一方、北朝鮮側はベトナム政府の首脳らとの会談も米朝首脳会談と同時期に要望しており、会談場所として都合の良いハノイでの開催を求めていた。（朝日新聞 ワシントン＝園田耕司）
グラント大統領夫妻のお手植えの ヒノキ と ギョクラン（泰山木）

これまで全く立ち寄ったことがなかったのだが、最近整備された上野公園の小高い一角に、なんとアメリカのグラント大統領の石碑が建立されており(図1)、1879年（図明治1２年）8月25日に大統領お手植えのヒノキ（檜：Cupressus lawsoniana)と夫人のお手植えのタイサンボク（泰山木：Magnolia grandiflora)があった（図２）。それぞれの木の下に石碑が建てられていた（図３、図４）。タイサンボクは別名のぎょくらんが石碑には記されている。
（江戸開国後こんなに早くからアメリカの大統領が日本を表敬訪問していたとは知らなかったなー。第２次世界大戦での敗戦後は、日本の首相は、代替わりのたびにアメリカの大統領を表敬訪問する朝貢外交をやらされているのだが。）
ヒノキは一枝のみが健在でいまにも枯れかけているが、タイサンボクはおどろくほど旺盛に上下左右に翼を伸ばしてこんもりとしている。いずれも20メートルを超えると思われる高さである。小生はこんなに大きなタイサンボクを見たことがない。よほど土壌が合っているのだろうと思われる。一方のヒノキの土壌は根の張りに障害があるのかもしれない。計算するとこれらの木は樹齢140年以上ということになる。
上野恩賜公園は1876年（明治9年）4月開園、東京大学の創立が明治10年だから、両木は東京大学とほぼ同じ樹齢ということになる。そう考えると140年の風雪に耐えてきた両木がなんとなくいとおしい。どうかこのヒノキ君が枯れないようにと願わずにはいられない。

この小高い一角は、桜並木のすぐそばなのだが、人々の流れから外れているのか、普段はあまり人がいないようだ。

付記：「このグラント将軍が自ら植えたとされる松が増上寺にあり、【グラント松】との名称で親しまれています」という記事をネットで見つけた。なるほど、訪問記念に木を植えるということは、後世に残る行事だが、その受け方の方を考えると、末代までの維持管理に気を遣うのは結構大変だと思う。現にこの上野の グラントヒノキ は、 いまや息絶え絶え であるとお見受けした。
